Cora Miles is an astronaut specialized on hardware, noted for being very tender and careful with her equipment, like the Pig.[2]
Background[]
Cora was born in a large family, the youngest child and only girl of 6. She lost her father while still a toddler, and her mother had to work two jobs; she grew up with her older brothers, all of whom were crazy about cars and motorcycles, and her playpen was a '57 Chevy on blocks; Cora's mother said that her first words were "monkey wrench".
All of her brothers eventually became mechanics by the time she graduated and after high school she majored in engineering, but it came as a surprise when she was accepted by the Air Force Academy and then the astronaut corps. This made her famous in her local community, which helped her work with politicians (even when she had twist their arms) to promote legislation for minority job-training and scholarships; such as the Cora Miles Scholarship Fund, the result of hundreds of tune-ups, brake jobs, and busted drive shafts. The politicians who met her found her refreshingly practical and positive, despite her insistence.
People began to talk about her running for office. She found the congressional campaign as fun, as she still sees herself as a mechanic who is allowed to play with NASA's toys. Deep inside her she wonders how people would think her important enough to help run the country.[3]
Attila mission[]
The arrival of Attila, despite being a menace, was an opportunity for a respite for her, to reunite with her colleagues and return to tinkering.[3]
Apparently she had spent many hours with Boston Low and they had a catchline: "you wish, in your dreams".
Miles had to trace Boston Low to his mountain retreat and spent several days with him, talking and fishing together, gaining his trust and achieving some rare camaraderie between them, until she managed to persuade him to return from retirement and lead the mission.
She served as a payload specialist of the shuttle Atlantis.
